Real Ales

Since real ale, unlike keg beer, is a live substance, still developing in the cask, it needs to be kept so that it develops properly. This demands skill on the part of the cellarman. You can load keg beer straight off the lorry, connect it up, and drink it.

But real ale is temperamental. If it is badly treated it will not taste good. Many a drinker has been put off real ale drinking after a visit to a pub which doesn’t understand real ale. But when it is good, it can be very, very good. The most pretentious vocabulary of the most poetic wine-tasters fails when confronted with good real beer.

Otter Ale – 4.5% ABV
The Otter Brewery was born in 1990 and is just outside the small village of Luppitt near Honiton and has become a runaway success, fast becoming Devon’s favourite ale. Their Otter Ale is their premium beer with its deep mahogany colour and fruit and malt taste it is an ale drinkers delight.

Doom Bar – 4% ABV
Award Winning Amber Ale with an enticing aroma of resinous hop, sweet malt and delicate roasted notes. The mouth feel is a balanced, complex blend of succulent dried fruit, lightly roasted malt and a subtle yet assertive bitterness. The finish is dry and refreshing.

Jail Ale – 4.8% ABV

Brewed at England’s highest brewery, the Dartmoor Brewery at Princetown, Jail Ale is a full-bodied, deep golden brown beer, with a well-rounded flavour and a rich, moreish aftertaste.

Guest Ales
We occasionally rest one of our regular ales in order to bring in new beers for our customers to experience. We also stock seasonal ales from some of our regular suppliers.


There are five basic tastes: bitter, salty, sweet, sour and umami. The last one may need some explanation: umami refers to the sense of deliciousness or savouriness we experience when we taste the amino acid glutamate, which is a component of proteins. Apparently, some wines have this umami flavour. It’s a recent addition to the tastebud repertoire in that until a few years ago we didn’t know about it.

Now these five basic tastes, in terms of information about what is in our mouths, are rather basic. Think of them as the lines in a child’s colouring book. The colour is added by the smell receptors in the nose, which are activated when volatile components of what’s in our mouth travel through to the nasal cavity from the back of our mouths.


White Wine

Kleindal, ‘Bouquet Blanc’ Muscat Colombard, South Africa (4) 12%
From the Western Cape in South Africa, a refreshing, medium white wine showing ripe elderflower fruit and a clean citrus finish.
Slightly sweet, this wine will be great with your dessert or with sharper cheeses.

Denis Marchais, Chardonnay, France (2) 12.5%
Lightly oaked, fresh and summery, with flavours of lemon, peach, apricot and pear but with a soft, nutty fullness on the finish.
From the Loire Valley in France, this Chardonnay will pair very well with shellfish.

La Voluta, Pinot Grigio, Italy (2) 12%
Pale gold appearance, fresh and dry, delicate with gentle floral and citrus aromas, a classic version of the Italian grape. From the Lombardy region of North-west Italy, this wine is a great match for white meats, fish or ideal on its own.

Tananga, Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand (2) 12%
This is a juicy and zesty wine with passion fruit and crunchy green apple flavours, a classic New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.
Delicious on its own or perfect with simple seafood, seafood salads and Thai spice dishes.

Cape Marlin, Chenin Blanc, South Africa (2) 12.5% Bottle £21.50
Beautiful honeyed character with balanced acidity and a pleasant finish. From the Western Cape in South Africa, pairs very well with fish and chips, grilled chicken, baked fish and fruity salads.

Domaine La Serre, Picpoul de Pinet, France (1) 12.5% Bottle £23.50
Picpoul, literally translates as “Lip Stinger”, referring to the grape’s naturally zingy freshness. Boasting plenty of stone fruit,
galia melon and zesty citrus. From the Languedoc region in Southeast France, this wine would be particularly great with
oysters, mussels and naked seafood dishes.

J. Moreau et Fils, Chablis ‘Elegance’, France (1) 12.5% Bottle £28.50
Powerful yet elegant nose with scents of white blossom and wild spice, lemongrass and fresh mint. Full, powerful and mineral on the palate, with citrus zest flavours. Savoured as an aperitif or with seafood and fish.

Rosé Wine

Liso Veinte, Grenache Rosado, Spain (1) 12%
Easy going, dry rosé with attractive strawberry fruit. Juicy and fresh with plenty of body, this wine is full of flavour, dry and well-balanced. From the Navarra region in Northern Spain, this rosé will be great with seafood pasta and salads.

Wildwood, Zinfandel Rose, USA (3) 11.5%

Red Wine

Peregrino, Merlot, Chile (C) 13%
Classic Chilean Merlot; fruit-driven, super soft and easy drinking with flavours of plum, blackberry and sandalwood on the finish. From the Central Valley in Chile, pairs well with beef dishes and venison or enjoyed on its own.

Pablo Cortez, Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina (C) 12.5%
Vibrant flavours of berries, plum marmalade and cherries. An intense, medium-bodied wine with soft tannins and a persistent finish. From Mendoza, Argentina, this Malbec will be perfect with leaner red meat, pork, turkey, creamy and cheesy dishes.

This Rioja combines great balance, approachable fruit, real depth, mineral qualities and a smoky, spicy dimension the oak.
From the Rioja region in Northern Spain. Perfect with smoky meat dishes, sausages, spicy dishes with potato.

Chateau Negrit Saint Emilion, Bordeaux, France (D) 12.5% Bottle £26.50
This wine offers a deep red colour and plays with the aromatic complexity of cedar, vanilla and red fruit notes. Soft and fleshy, the nose is well-balanced. The mouth reveals its personality with a nice roundness of fruits. From the Bordeaux region of Western France, this wine is great with hard cheeses, any red meat and a Sunday roast.
